Eden Farm is situated in the village of Voigtshain (meaning "Lords Road") in the county of Saxony, Germany.
Eden Farm is an eco-sustainable project which we have embarked on since November 2010. The main aim of Eden Farm is to provide as much food in the way of fresh vegetables and fruit all year round, along with a variety of meat sources using the principles of permaculture. The main principle of permaculture is to "produce sustainable edible ecosystems". Other aims, to name a few, include providing as much of our own energy as possible and reusing as much waste products as possible so that a minimum amount of waste leaves the farm. The overall result of these aims means that we will have a minimum impact on the environment and therefore reduce our costs and reliance on external sources of food, energy and waste removal.
Eden Farm has been taken on as a long term project with realistic achievable targets. A key objective for the farm is to produce enough food sources so that within twelve months we expect to reduce our weekly shopping bill by half, with a further reduction in twelve to eighteen months to three quarters. Other plans include using solar PV panels to supply our electric needs and burning wood from sustainable sources in our wood stove to heat the farm house and water during the winter, also the use of a full biological waste treatment tank and harvesting rain water.
As much of the work will be carried out on the farm by ourselves, only bringing in outside help where a more knowledgeable resource is required, we hope to again keep our costs down to an acceptable level.
A long term target which we hope to achieve within two till three years, once we are established, will be to allow visits to the farm for organizations, the general public and also students from higher education and mainstream education.
